About the Exhibition
Behind the hands that create things lies a vast accumulation of life built over generations: how people in a particular place have engaged with nature, what they have found beautiful, how they have welcomed others, prayed, and lived their lives.
Craftsmanship is not passed down solely through the hands of artisans. It has been nurtured through everyday life—through harmony with nature, faith in unseen beings, rituals and gestures, and relationships between people.
Perhaps this was, in itself, a reason to live—a source of ikigai, or a sense of purpose in life.
The works presented here are practices that carry this inherited culture into contemporary life and explore new roles for craft through encounters with different places and people.
We invite you to experience the dialogues that emerge when Japan’s craft culture meets people from around the world, each carrying the roots of their own cultures and places.
Profile
UMU Kyoto is an artist collective of designers and craftspeople based in Kyoto and Shimane, Japan.
Bringing together creators from different fields—including product designer Shinya Kobayashi, fashion designer Yumi Komori, and urushi craftsman Takuya Tsutsumi—the collective combines traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design.
UMU Kyoto works to preserve and carry forward local industries while bringing Japanese craftsmanship to international markets.
Through initiatives that extend beyond conventional boundaries of making—including the use of satoyama resources, overseas residencies, and collaborations across different materials and disciplines—the collective seeks to create new value through Japanese craftsmanship and handwork.
