Chichibu city, Saitama Prefecture (Sericulture)

Chichibu has long flourished as a center of sericulture,
as rice cultivation was difficult in its mountainous terrain.
At Kagemori Sericulture Farm, the last remaining sericulture farm in Chichibu City,
new initiatives are actively underway to pass this tradition on to the next generation.
Each year at Chichibu Shrine, the Sanshi-sai (Silk and Silkworm Festival)
is held in conjunction with the Chichibu Night Festival—
a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage event that attracts over 200,000 visitors—
to offer gratitude to the deities for the production of cocoons.

埼玉県秩父市(養蚕)

山岳地域でお米が育たず、古くから養蚕の地として栄えた秩父。
秩父市最後の養蚕農家、影森養蚕所では、養蚕を次世代につないでいくための
新たな取り組みも積極的に行なっています。
秩父神社では毎年、ユネスコ無形文化遺産にも登録され、20万人以上が来場する
秩父夜祭に合わせ、繭の生産への感謝を神様に伝える蚕糸祭が行われています。

Okaya city, Nagano Prefecture (Thread)

Okaya City is home to the Miyasaka Silk Mill,
one of only three silk reeling factories remaining in Japan.
Around Lake Suwa, a vital water source for the region,
many shrines and sacred sites reflect long-standing nature worship.
Stone statues of silkworm deities are a distinctive feature of the area.
Because silkworms are sacrificed in the reeling process,
memorial ceremonies have been held for decades
at Shōkō-ji Temple (Shingon Chizan sect).
In front of the Silkworm Memorial Tower, built with donations
from 30,000 people in the silk industry, prayers and incense are offered
to express gratitude for the lives of the silkworms.

長野県岡谷市(製糸)

日本に3件あるうちの1件の製糸工場、宮坂製糸所がある岡谷市。
地域の重要な水資源である諏訪湖の周りは、
水をはじめとする自然信仰の神社や信仰の遺跡が多くあります。
蚕の神様を彫った石像が多いのも特徴。
また、蚕の殺傷が行われるのは製糸のタイミング。
そのため、ここでは真言宗智山派 照光寺にて、
何十年もの間、供養のお祭りが続いています。
製糸関係者3万人の寄付で建てられた蚕霊供養塔の前で、
婦人会による御詠歌や焼香、
住職らの供養を行い、蚕への感謝を伝えます。
